Interstate 5<\/b>\u00a0(I-5<\/b>) is a major north\u2013south route of the\u00a0Interstate Highway System<\/a>\u00a0in the United States, stretching from the\u00a0Mexican border<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0San Ysidro<\/a>\u00a0crossing to the\u00a0Canadian border<\/a>\u00a0near\u00a0Blaine, Washington<\/a>. From San Ysidro, the segment of I-5 in California runs north across the length of the state, and crosses into\u00a0Oregon<\/a>\u00a0south of the\u00a0Medford<\/a>–Ashland<\/a>\u00a0metropolitan area. It is the more important and most-used of the two major north\u2013south routes on the Pacific Coast, the other being\u00a0U.S. Route\u00a0101<\/a>\u00a0(US\u00a0101), which is primarily coastal.<\/p>\n

This highway links the major California cities of\u00a0San Diego<\/a>,\u00a0Santa Ana<\/a>,\u00a0Los Angeles<\/a>,\u00a0Stockton<\/a>,\u00a0Sacramento<\/a>, and\u00a0Redding<\/a>. The Interstate bypasses the San Francisco Bay area, which is about 80 miles (130\u00a0km) west of the highway. I-5 is generally referred to as “5” in\u00a0Northern California<\/a>, and is often called “the 5” in the\u00a0Southern California<\/a>\u00a0area.<\/p>\n

I-5 has several named portions: the\u00a0Montgomery Freeway<\/b>,\u00a0San Diego Freeway<\/b>,\u00a0Santa Ana Freeway<\/a>,\u00a0Golden State Freeway<\/b>, and\u00a0West Side Freeway<\/b>.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
